Massachusetts Apartment Association Honors WinnCompanies CEO Gilbert Winn with 2023 Industry Excellence Award

Honor Caps a Successful Year of Industry Awards for Winn-Owned Communities

BOSTON (January 31, 2024) – WinnCompanies wrapped up one of its most successful years for industry honors with the Massachusetts Apartment Association (MAA) honoring CEO Gilbert Winn with its 2023 Industry Excellence Award and four properties managed by WinnResidential were also named as best in their class.

Appointed CEO of the company in 2015, Winn was distinguished by industry peers for his focus on tenant partnerships and pioneering quality-of-life initiatives for residents, including a model housing stability program to support those struggling with financial hardships and an innovative resident services platform that partners with non-profits to deliver positive social impact.

The MAA honor capped a year in which seven different apartment communities developed and/or managed by the company earned 11 awards for their performance, as judged by several multifamily industry groups.

Six of the communities earning honors this year are WinnDevelopment projects that are managed by WinnResidential:

The Gordon H. Mansfield Veteran’s Community in Tinton Falls, NJ, a 70-unit apartment community for military veterans, including those transitioning from homelessness, developed in partnership with the Massachusetts non-profit, Soldier On. It won the Excellence Award for New Construction Community of the Year from the National Apartment Association (NAA), as well as an Edson Award for Tax Credit Excellence from the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition for especially impactful use of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC).

The Residences at Brighton Marine in Boston, MA, a 102-unit, veteran’s preference property with on-site supportive services, developed in partnership with the Massachusetts non-profit, Brighton Marine. The community won the NAA Excellence Award for Best Affordable Community of the Year, as well as the Sustainable Living Award from the MAA.

Mission Main in Boston, MA, a 535-unit complex created through a HOPE VI redevelopment partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), WinnCompanies, the Mission Main Tenant Task Force, and the Boston Housing Authority. Currently undergoing a $66 million renovation, it was recognized by the MAA as Affordable Community of the Year.

201 Canal, a 125-unit mixed-income community in Lowell, MA, featuring 54 units of workforce housing and 5,000 square feet of commercial space. It earned top honors from the MAA for New Construction of Year and was also named the Grand Winner in the Mixed Income Project of the Year category by MultiFamily Executive magazine.

Preserve North, a 254-unit affordable housing community in Peabody, MA, that underwent a substantial rehabilitation after being acquired by WinnCompanies in 2019. It earned two awards from the MAA as Affordable Community of the Year and as New Construction Project of the Year.

The Watson, a 140-unit mixed-income community in Quincy, MA, featuring 86 apartments for middle-income households, developed in partnership with the Massachusetts non-profit NeighborWorks Housing Solutions. It won the NAA Excellence Award for Small Community of the Year.

A seventh community, Beach House Apartments in Revere, MA, is a 234-unit market rate community located along Revere Beach. Owned by Baystone Development and managed by WinnResidential, it was honored by the MAA as Large Community of the Year.
