Our History
How We Got Here
WinnCompanies was founded in 1971 when Arthur Winn recognized the opportunity to develop high quality affordable housing that would be exceptionally well-managed; accepted as community assets by public, private and non-profit stakeholders; and, treated with pride by its residents.

Company Founded by Arthur Winn
Arthur Winn founds WinnCompanies by beginning work on a 250-unit affordable housing community in Salem, MA, which remains part of our portfolio to this day.
WinnCompanies Enters New Markets
After building the company’s strength developing several award-winning properties in New England, WinnCompanies branches out to other states, including Washington, DC., Pennsylvania, and Georgia.
Checking In?
In anticipation of the revitalization of Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston, WinnDevelopment opens the doors to the award-winning Bostonian Hotel on land purchased in the late 1970s.
Headed South
WinnResidential begins to gain business momentum as it engages in third-party contract management services for clients in Richmond, VA.
Property Rescue
WinnDevelopment leads numerous efforts to convert failed condominium communities into affordable housing and becomes a pioneer in mixed-income apartment developments.
WinnDevelopment Mission Possible
Boston community, Mission Main, rebuilt 535 units. HUD Secretary Mel Martinez cites the project as “an example of the type of housing we would like to see all across the country.”
Minority & Women-Owned Business Award
WinnResidential is recognized by MassHousing for the first time as the leading partner with Minority and Women Owned Businesses, an honor it has since earned for nearly two decades.
Reporting For Duty
WinnCompanies forms a joint venture with LendLease and assumes management of Fort Hood in Kileen, TX, the first of over 40,000 privatized military homes we manage today.
Big Bootts to Fill
The Apartments at Boott Mills in Lowell, MA, earns WinnDevelopment a national award for adaptive re-use, the first of dozens of historic preservation honors in the years to come.
Solar Powered
Established the company's in-house sustainability department, Open Market ESCO (OME), to lead the industry in energy-efficient retrofits, 'green financing', and renewable energy development.
Powering Up
WinnDevelopment embarks on the largest Deep Energy Retrofit project in the United States at Castle Square Apartments in Boston, MA, saving over 50% on energy usage.
Higher Education
Commemorating its 40th Anniversary, WinnCompanies forms WinningEdge Scholarship program by awarding 40 scholarships to 40 students in their communities.
Adaptive Reuse
Loft Five50 in Lawrence, MA, wins numerous awards, including Major Rehabilitation of a Historic Structure into Affordable Rental Housing from NAHMA.
High Five!
WinnResidential is recognized as the 5th largest multi-family property manager in the country by the National Multi-Housing Council, with over 97,000 units managed across 22 states and DC.
Connected Communities
Launched Connected Communities, our collective impact approach to true community development. Focusing on People, Place, and Partnership, Connected Communities supports our community teams, residents, partners, and stakeholders across the nation.
High Honors
Urban Land Institute announces The Watson as recipient of the Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable Housing Award for the integration of low-, moderate-, and higher- income households.
Help is on the Way
The Winn Employee Relief Fund (WERF), a 501(c)(3) charity, was established to help team members experiencing severe financial need due to unexpected emergencies. It accepts tax-deductible donations from team members and partners of the company, creating a pool of funds to support team members in need.
Serving Those That Served
With partner Brighton Marine, completed of a 100% veteran's preference community in Brighton, offering affordable and middle-income housing, with supportive services, to veterans.
WinnCompanies' Housing Stability Program
Prevented more than 15,000 evictions in its 1st year and is featured in The White House Eviction Prevention Summit and US Crongressional Hearing on Protecting Renters During the Pandemic.
Acting as a Community Champion
